Japan's 115-Company Gap: The Largest Untapped GCC Cohort in India

The gap that defines the opportunity

India hosts 2,117 operational Global Capability Centers as of FY2026, employing 2.36 million professionals and generating approximately USD 98.4 billion in market revenue. Within that ecosystem, 506 of the Forbes Global 2000 companies now operate a GCC in India.

Japan is the third-largest country on the Forbes Global 2000, with 192 companies. Yet over 60 percent of them, roughly 115 firms, have not yet established an India center. That is the single largest underrepresented country-cohort in India's entire GCC ecosystem.

Non-US GCCs are growing at nearly twice the rate of US ones, and Japan is the largest single national pool inside that shift. The Japan-to-India GCC channel is at an inflection point that no comparable cohort is at currently.

The anchor that changes everything

In June 2025, Dai-ichi Life Holdings opened its first-ever overseas GCC in Hyderabad, the first such move by a major Japanese insurer. Hyderabad was the city chosen. The center plans to scale from 60 to 600 employees by 2027, focused on AI, cybersecurity, and data analytics.

Japanese companies cluster geographically. Once one respected peer from a sector enters a location, the rest follow. That is not an assumption. It is the most thoroughly documented pattern in the academic literature on Japanese foreign direct investment. The Dai-ichi Life entry is not just a single win. It is the beginning of a cascade.

Japan targets 5,000 companies in India by 2029

At the August 2025 India-Japan summit, both governments announced an AI Cooperation Initiative and a working target of attracting 5,000 Japanese companies to India by 2029. Japan has established dedicated infrastructure to support this: eight Japan Industrial Townships across India, an SME Facilitation Cell in Tokyo, and a Japan-India finance facility with a corpus of USD 9.9 billion.

Hyderabad is already inside this story. The task is to make it the default destination for the insurance and BFSI wave that follows Dai-ichi Life, and to build the anchor that triggers the cascade.
